Top Cop is Mum on Rumors
Police Commissioner Thomas Frazier had nothing to say about persistent rumors that he was on the verge of resigning to take an out of town job.
WBAL radio yesterday reported that Frazier had notified Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke that he would be leaving the top job in the Police Department to take a job in Washington, D.C.
At a press conference yesterday, Frazier would neither confirm nor deny the allegations, merely saying “these are personnel issues, and I will not comment.”
Most of the candidates in the Mayoral race have not given Frazier’s tour of duty a warm review. Council President Lawrence Beil and City Councilman Martin O’Malley have been consistently critical of Frazier’s management of the police department from the floor of the City Council cham
bers. Former Councilman Carl Stokes and Register of Wills Mary Conaway also have called for his removal in stump speeches across the city.
One rumor said that Frazier would make an announcement about his future plans today.
The department’s public relation officer, Robert Weinhold, denied that any press conference was planned.
