Pride and Protest: Poetry of the American Civil Rights Movement Presented by Jeffrey Lamar Coleman Pennsylvania Avenue Branch Library (at North Ave.) The connection between social change and art was made evident in the poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks, Alice Walker, Amiri Baraka, Michael S. Harper and others during the Civil Rights Movement. In this lecture, Dr. Coleman explores the impact of the movement’s upheaval on American writers and their artistic and political contributions to the struggle. Jeffrey Lamar Coleman is Assistant Professor of English at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, specializing in multicultural/American literature. He earned his Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of New Mexico.
